Common Back Problems You May Not Know About

In this article, I’ll talk about some of the causes of back problems that many people do not know. Most people have heard that sitting at a computer can cause your back to hurt. Why, you may ask? Because many people slouch at while sitting at their computer or even while on their smart phones. Experts recommend taking many small breaks while at your computer or doing some stretching to help your back. Sitting all day can put added pressure on your discs and vertebrae. To help alleviate some of the problem, you should adjust your seat, so that your computer is at eye level and your arms and knees are bent at a 90 degree angle.Sleeping on your stomach can also be another reason for back pain. Tummy sleep can put uneven pressure on your joints and muscles, whereas sleeping on your side or back keeps your spine elongated and neutral. Of course, some people can’t sleep without being on their stomachs, so experts recommend that you put a small pillow under your hips and get a pillow for your head that will keep your head in line with your spine.Of course, we need to talk about the fact that smoking helps contribute to back problems as well. The nicotine in cigarettes restricts blood flow to your vertebrae and discs, which can cause them to age and break down more quickly. It’s also rumored to impede the body’s ability to absorb calcium, which could cause osteoporosis in later years. We all know what can help this; quit smoking.Stress causes many physical problems in your body; headaches, illness, depression, anxiety and, of course, it can cause back pain as well. Studies have also shown the people with back pain are more likely to be depressed. Few scientists also found that poor coping skills, such as withdrawing or avoiding their problems, can trigger the release of cortisol, a stress hormone, which causes the muscles in your lower back and shoulders to tense up and spasm. Of course, the way to help this can be anti-depressants, and even doing things to improve your mood, which can include deep breathing, yoga, exercise and meditation.

Fashion can even cause back problems, especially for women.  High heels are a big factor in that, but they’re even saying sandals and flip flops can cause back pain now. Sandals and flip flops have little to no arch support, which can cause pain in the back. Recommendations are to switch your shoes out many times through the week. Also, girls, your purse should be LESS than 10 percent of your body weight. There can be many ways to alleviate back pain. Medications, exercise, chiropractors and even inversion tables.
